Basketball Rules Explained
If you want to know the basics of basketball, it helps to have a basic understanding of the game's rules. A basic understanding is essential if you want to learn how to play the sport correctly and with as little fouls as possible. Each team member is allowed a free throw line five feet from the top of the backboard. Players are not allowed to block the three-point line, but they are not allowed to tip-toe on the court. Additionally, there are five fouls per game that are assessed to players who get out of bounds, start an excessive motion or jump through the foul line.
The official rules for basketball can be quite confusing, especially for beginners. One of the most important aspects of the rules is the basket shot. In the United States and Canada, for instance, a bucket shot is considered a free throw attempt. Free throws are scored based on the number of points the player gets in the basket. While the basket shot and three-point shots are separate shots, many rules of basketball still apply to them.
Each team has a designated player. That player must be legally on the court when the ball is touched by another person. When a player goes into the foul line, that person is considered out of bounds and cannot touch the ball. A shooting foul may be called in this situatio
Free throws are considered to be a point during the game. Possession begins when the ball is brought into play by a shooting foul. A team only has five seconds to get the ball into play on one of their possessions. Once the five seconds are up, the ball is put back in play and another foul is given.
The foul that is most commonly called is the traveling violation. A team must run out of the defensive box before using their foul line to take a shot. Doing so makes it impossible for their opponents to legally take a shot with the ball within five feet of the hoop. If a team commits a travel violation early in the game, they will be given a penalty foul.
Players may call fouls against each other when they foul a team member for an intentional or unintentional trip or draw with the ball. This is not a foul that they call themselves, but it is an unfair action. Should the player who was tripped not call his own foul, then it is an unfair action on his part. Teams must stop playing immediately and find the person that drew the foul and give him a technical foul.
Should there be an overtime situation, the last place team on the floor gets two points. The winning team receives one point. Should the game end in a tie, the game is declared a foul. The team that has more fouls than the other team at the end of regulation or the half ends up getting two points while the other team has one.
Should there be a three-point game and a foul is called, the ball goes to the team with the most free throw attempts. The other team has thirty seconds to play, during which time any technical fouls must be paid. After the three-minute overtime, the game is declared a foul. If there is still no foul call, then the game is declared a tie.
When a player receives a free throw, this starts a possession. Free throws can be made by the shooting guard, the small forward, the center, or any position inside the three-point line. If a player makes one free throw, he is declared to be out of bounds. The ball goes to the team with the most possessions after the free throws are made.
When a player makes two free throws, the ball goes to the free throw line, where it remains until the buzzer sounds. A team must make three points during the regular game play or overtime. If a team makes more three-point shots than their opponent, they win.
If a team is to score two points after one period and their opponent scores three points in a span of ten seconds, then the first team to get three points is considered the winner. This rule also applies if there is a two-minute lead or one-point lead. The first team to three points wins. If a team has a chance to go on offense and on defense before their opponent has three chances, they are awarded three points. When the game is over, the coach must call a time out.
